About American Apparel

The American apparel company American Apparel was a global phenomenon. It was well-known for its everyday and laid-back wear, which typically included basic styles and plain colours. In 1989, Dov Charney created the company with the intention of selling wholesale. Since majority of their clothing is produced in downtown Los Angeles, American Apparel's "Made in the USA" motto has attracted a lot of positive press. Young adults tended to favour the label's products because of their "hipster" vibe.

The body-positive message and semi-naked women in American Apparel's controversial ad campaigns made the company famous. These ads were met with both acclaim and criticism from those who believed they objectified women. American Apparel declared bankruptcy in 2016 owing to mounting debt and falling revenues. Later, in a bankruptcy auction, the trademark was purchased by Canadian clothing maker Gildan Activewear.

Gildan Active wear kept American Apparel going strong as an online business, and it even added a few brick-and-mortar locations. In 2017, however, Gildan Activewear decided to pull the plug on all physical American Apparel stores in favour of expanding the brand's online presence. American Apparel's popularity and significance in the marketplace therefore plummeted.
